Wonderful News!!

For all of the blustering in the pregame video at the Garden - "Respect, Honor, Tradition" - the franchise rarely showed it. For all of the overpriced merchandise in the Garden, the only items not featuring current players or members of the '94 team are the replica banners for Eddie and Rod Gilbert. The game night audio staff almost never play the classic Rangers Victory Song.

Something had to be done. Back in January I said that it was Time To Honour N.Y.'s Hockey Heroes and now, according to Larry Brooks of the Post, that time is coming:
Slap Shots has learned the Rangers next season will stage a night for the two signature members of those clubs from the '50s and '60s, in which they will raise Bathgate's No. 9 and Howell's No. 3 to the famous round ceiling. These will not be official number retirements, but they will be honored numbers, recognized to be as distinct in Rangers history as Bathgate and Howell, themselves.

Now I will not presume that they actually listened to me, or even to the legion of other fans who made their voices heard, but I couldn't be happier with the news. Finally this franchise will honour the legacy that was left by some of the greatest players to ever wear the jersey.

It's about time.
