Even when ESPN deigns to cover hockey, they screw it up. This morning's Sportscenter had Josh Elliott mediating between Matt Barnaby and Barry Melrose during a short season-preview segment. Barnaby (the former Ranger) picked the Blueshirts as the sleeper in the East. So, as ESPN is apt to do, they ran b-roll over his explanation. The video they ran? Scott Gomez skating with the puck and Colton Orr winning a fight. Really?
We already get mediocre, half-assed work from Versus - we don't need it from the self-styled "world-wide leader." Go talk about football, baseball, soccer - the sports you own the rights to and have hired people who actually know about the games - we can toil in 'anonymity' without the condescending coverage. We moved on a long time ago.

- I am Ranger fan and season ticket holder who is more than a little obsessed with hockey. The first thing I can remember is watching a Ranger game with my dad, listening to him yell "Shoot the puck Barry!" I loathe the Islanders, hate everyone else in the Atlantic and despise Mmmaarrrttttyyyy and Cindy. While I am a objective journalist in real life (seriously), this is NOT a media site and is kept quite far from my profession; it is simply an outlet for me to let loose my opinions of the Blueshirts - very distinctly Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. My Ranger rantings and ravings have appeared on (or been linked to) such notable sites as the New York Times, Puck Daddy, Deadspin and NBC's Pro Hockey Talk - and I can't thank them enough. This is one of the few times I have to agree with you Scotty, ESPN screws up hockey coverage all the time. Then again, they do not seem to interested anyways as the following sports get mentioned first before hockey: Baseball, football, basketball, college football, college basketball, and boxing. At this point I rather them not cover hockey as all, as their knowledge only goes as far as what Cindy "Crybaby" Crosby does.
Not true. Their production usually is better than that. I know some of the people who do it and they're top notch.
Color me surprised.
Battle of NY - I worked there, I can assure you that their production is usually better than that for the sports they care about. That's it.
did you also notice how when the conversation moved to Shanahan (Barnaby says retire, Melrose advises to wait for the Rangers to call), they showed the same three goals from about five different angles each?
I realize Shanahan has lost a step or two, but they couldn't find enough video to fill thirty seconds? one goal from each of his NHL stops would have done the trick.
